Introduction:
Kedarnath has been a pilgrimage centre since ancient times. It is not certain who constructed the original Kedarnath temple and when. A mythological account ascribes the temple’s construction to the legendary Pandava brothers mentioned in the Mahabharata. However, the Mahabharata does not mention any place called Kedarnath. One of the earliest references to Kedarnath occurs in the Skanda Purana (c. 7th-8th century), which names Kedara (Kedarnath) as the place where Shiva released the holy waters of Ganga from his matted hair, resulting in the formation of the Ganges river.

Day 03: Gaurikund to Kedarnath Temple (21km)

• Wake up to beautiful mountain view and sip on some hot coffee or tea
• Drive to Gauri-kund … Post breakfast, its time for Kedarnath Trek
• Visit Kedarnath temple , attain evening aarti and seek blessings of Lord Shiva
• Dinner and night stay at Kedarnath (Only Dormitory / Tent Accommodation here)

Day 04: Kedarnath To Chopta (80 km ~ 2 Hrs )

• Wake up to beautiful sunrise and spiritual view of Kedarnath Temple
• Early Morning Kedarbaba Darshan – Post breakfast, its time for Kedarnath to Sonprayag by trail
• Ready for Chopta by private vehicle
• Dinner and night stay at Chopta

Day 05: Chopta to Tunganath to Joshimath (160 km ~ 5 Hrs )

• Wake up to beautiful sunrise
• Ready for Tunganath Mahadev Trail and Time permits and if interested Chandrashila Peak (~1 hr asend) ..
Evening start Road journey to Joshimath

Day 06: Joshimath to Badrinath to Pipalkoti (150 km ~ 3 hr)

We @ शिखर वेध have planned our yearly event of Panhala – Pavankhind – Padbhraman Mohim.
This Mohim commemorates Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s escape from the besieged Panhala to the safety of Vishalgad.

History:

Panhala – Pavankhind -Vishalgad

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was under siege of Siddi Johar on Panhala fort from 2^nd March 1660. The siege lasted long and all food stocks had finished and made things difficult for Shivaji Maharaj. It was impossible to defeat the 30000 soldiered troop of Siddi. Shivaji Maharaj with some 600 mavalas decided to escape to Vishalgad, 65 kms away. It was Ashadi Pournima, with heavy rains falling. Chatrapati Shivaji Raje informed Siddi that he would surrender hence Siddi troops were little careless. Taking advantage Shivaji Maharaj escaped from Panhala. He wasn’t safe till he reached Vishalgad. Some how Siddi’s troops spotted Shivaji Raje’s escape, he immediately sent horsed troops behind him and they got hold of Shivaji, who was later brought to Siddi’s camp. But it was Raja Shivaji’s game plan; person whom they had caught was not Shivaji Raje, but Siva Kashid Nhavi who was immediately killed. Siddi somehow came to know that Shivaji Maharaj was on his way to Vishalgad, and so sent troops behind him. Shivaji Raje knew that Siddi’s troops were following him. Baji Prabhu, Chatrapati Shivaji’s loyal sardar decided to stay in Ghod Khind with 300 mavalas, a col were mountain ridges near Vishalgad unite and was the only way to Vishalgad then. Baji Prabhu with his 300 mavalas had guerilla warfare at Ghodkhind and held the Siddis troops there. They fought bravely till their death. It was only after Baji heard the canon fire indicating safe reach of Shivaji Maharaj at Vishalgad, he gave his life. It was 21 hour continuous journey from Panhala to Vishalgad. Story didn’t end here; Chatrapati Shivaji Raje had to fight his way to Vishalgad. Vishalgad is a fort difficult to conquer, difficult to lay siege. Also even if siege was laid, one would have enough time to escape to Konkan. Siddi was building siege on Vishalgad, but Shivaji Raje with his diplomatic trick made Adil Shah bring back Siddi Johar.

Height: 1412 meters (4510 feet)

Harishchandragad: The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the Medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.

Konkan Kada: The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra’s hood.

Kedareshwar: The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water.

Fireflies: Fireflies or lightning bugs make light within their bodies. This process is called bioluminescence and is shared by many other organisms, mostly sea-living or marine organisms. Rajmachi, located in the Lonavala region is accessible from both Karjat as well as Lonavala. The village of Udhewadi lies on the massive plateau that greets one on getting to Rajmachi. The twin forts of Srivardhan & Manoranjan grace the backdrop of the village.

A little distance down from the village lies a serene and beautiful lake called Uday Sagar Talav. Behind the lake lies an ancient Monolith, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.

Konkan Kada: The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra’s hood.

Kedareshwar: The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water.

As the name is the jungle, so dense and dark that at some places the sun-rays don’t reach to ground at noon time as well and one may not find any route out of it if lost.

Jungle trek : One of the ancient sahyadri passes that joins ghat to konkan area, Andharban offers endless trudge through the thicket forest.

Trekking : we will be walking on ridge offering awesome view of the Kundalika Valley, Bhira dam and the mountain ranges of Tamhini ghat.

Waterfalls :: En-route 4-5 small waterfalls to enjoy

Brief Introduction about Kothaligad / Peth fort : –

Height: ~ 3100 feet
Grade: Medium
Time: ~ Maximum 2.5 hrs from Ambivali, Base Village
Location: Karjat region

Kothaligad is more commonly known as the fort of Peth because the village of Peth is situated at its base. The pinnacle of the Peth can be seen from the village. It looks like a filed surface. On reaching the top of the fort, we see caves carved in huge rocks. The first one is the cave of Goddess, besides which is a water cistern and the last one is the specious Bhairoba cave. A flat floor and well-sculpted pillars are specialty of the cave. Along the Bhairoba cave, steps are carved leading the pinnacle. Four–Five potholes and some cannon balls are scattered in the fort.

” SANDHAN” …. is a beautiful place situated in the Western Ghats near Ratangad. Amidst the water carved valley of 50 to 500 feet deep and around two km long. Experience the heart throbbing crossing of 4 ft deep water pool in the way of rock floored water carved valley.

This will be your memorable trek.

Also you will get chance to Rappel down four small patches to reach the base of SANDHAN VALLEY.

Brief Introduction about Sondai: -

Height: 1200 feet

Grade:  Easy …

Time: ~ Maximum 2 hrs from Sondewadi, Base Village

Location: Karjat

Sondai is not such a famous fort near Karjat Chowk Phata. Sondai Fort Trek is nine kilometers from Karjat railway station. It offers a beautiful view of Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, Songiri forts, Karnala Fort, and Matheran mountain range. Sondai Fort Karjat was used as a watchtower to protect the trade routes. Sondewadi and Wavarle are the base villages of Sondai fort. Sondewadi village is situated at 1/4th height of this Fort.

There are two water cisterns on, and steps are carved out of rocks to go to the topmost point where an idol of Sondai Devi stands. Two more water cisterns are on the way and have potable water. Waverle is another village from where a bit difficult approach to the Fort passes through the dense forest. Sondai trek, an iron ladder, has been installed. It has made the climb till the summit to seek the blessing of Sondai Devi temple safer for all the hikers and devotees.
