Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध have planned our yearly event of Panhala – Pavankhind – Padbhraman Mohim.
This Mohim commemorates Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s escape from the besieged Panhala to the safety of Vishalgad.

यंदाचे वर्ष ही मोहीम आयोजित करण्याचे ‘शिखर वेध’ या संस्थेचे पंधरावे वर्ष आहे !!!

The cost for the event is about Rs. 3700 / – per head

This includes
> Mumbai – Kolhapur – Mumbai SL class Train fare
> Kolhapur – Panhala & Pavankhind – Kolhapur Transportation by Private Vehicle …
> All Veg. foods for 2 days as mentioned;

History:

Panhala – Pavankhind -Vishalgad

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was under siege of Siddi Johar on Panhala fort from 2^nd March 1660. The siege lasted long and all food stocks had finished and made things difficult for Shivaji Maharaj. It was impossible to defeat the 30000 soldiered troop of Siddi. Shivaji Maharaj with some 600 mavalas decided to escape to Vishalgad, 65 kms away. It was Ashadi Pournima, with heavy rains falling. Chatrapati Shivaji Raje informed Siddi that he would surrender hence Siddi troops were little careless. Taking advantage Shivaji Maharaj escaped from Panhala. He wasn’t safe till he reached Vishalgad. Some how Siddi’s troops spotted Shivaji Raje’s escape, he immediately sent horsed troops behind him and they got hold of Shivaji, who was later brought to Siddi’s camp. But it was Raja Shivaji’s game plan; person whom they had caught was not Shivaji Raje, but Siva Kashid Nhavi who was immediately killed. Siddi somehow came to know that Shivaji Maharaj was on his way to Vishalgad, and so sent troops behind him. Shivaji Raje knew that Siddi’s troops were following him. Baji Prabhu, Chatrapati Shivaji’s loyal sardar decided to stay in Ghod Khind with 300 mavalas, a col were mountain ridges near Vishalgad unite and was the only way to Vishalgad then. Baji Prabhu with his 300 mavalas had guerilla warfare at Ghodkhind and held the Siddis troops there. They fought bravely till their death. It was only after Baji heard the canon fire indicating safe reach of Shivaji Maharaj at Vishalgad, he gave his life. It was 21 hour continuous journey from Panhala to Vishalgad. Story didn’t end here; Chatrapati Shivaji Raje had to fight his way to Vishalgad. Vishalgad is a fort difficult to conquer, difficult to lay siege. Also even if siege was laid, one would have enough time to escape to Konkan. Siddi was building siege on Vishalgad, but Shivaji Raje with his diplomatic trick made Adil Shah bring back Siddi Johar.

Rajmachi, located in the Lonavala region is accessible from both Karjat as well as Lonavala. The village of Udhewadi lies on the massive plateau that greets one on getting to Rajmachi. The twin forts of Srivardhan & Manoranjan grace the backdrop of the village.

A little distance down from the village lies a serene and beautiful lake called Uday Sagar Talav, no trek to Rajmachi is complete without taking a dip in this lake.

Brief Introduction about Harishchandragad:
Height: 1412 meters (4510 feet)
Grade:Easy
Time: ~ 2 hrs from Pachnai, Base Village
Location:Nagar region

Harishchandragad: The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the Medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.

Konkan Kada: The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra’s hood.

Kedareshwar: The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water.

Brief Intro about tour:
Grade           : Easy

Activities : Scuba Diving,

The cost for da Tour is about Rs. 13500 per head (Veg Meal) & Rs 14500/- per head (Non-veg Meal)

Details as below:

Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.

Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.

Sindhudurga fort:

Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory.The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shivarajeshwar temple’ of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of shivaji’s fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Tarkarli Beach

Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Brief Introduction abt Raigad:-

Fort Raigad is much more than a mere tourist spot. It is a sacred place of pilgrimage, which has left an imprint of the grand vision of Hindavi Swarajya as cherished by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
Fort Raigad was the capital of the most illustrious Maratha sovereign,nurtured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.It is a monument of his prophetic vision of Hindavi Swarajya.Sightseeing :

The first main place on the fort is the main door – ‘Maha Darawaja‘. After the main door, Ganga sagar and some remains of the palace can be seen. Hirkani Buruj can also be seen and one doesn’t believe the heroic deeds of Hirkani (she came down the fort barefooted at night from this point). The famous ‘Takmak Tok’ or place for life punishment – is on the north side. It’s thrilling to stand near Takmak Tok which is always full of breeze. One can see the ammunition store here. The marketplace on the fort is worth watching and history lovers spend time here recalling the great warrior.

The statue of ‘Shivaji Maharaj’ is situated at the center of the fort. The Samadhi of Maharaj is also very beautiful and one can remember Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his contribution and full dedication to Swaraj. The other places to visit on the fort are Jagdishwar Temple, Koli Lake, Shirkai Temple etc. The view of ‘Lingana’ is also wonderful.
