Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध have arranged a 2 – day Trip to Pratapgad – Shivthargal – Raigad

Brief Introduction about Places as below: -
.
Pratapgad Fort is a mountain fort built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is at a distance of 24 km from the hill station of Mahabaleshwar. The fort holds a sturdy view of coastal Konkan. The Bhavani Temple and Afzal Khan’s tomb are other places of interest.

Pratapgad consists of two forts – an upper fort built on the top of the hill and a lower fort immediately below on the south and the east. Surrounding areas can be easily taken guard from the fort on almost all the sides. The southern side is rocky while the eastern side has a strong outwork ending in the Afzal Buruj.

It is believed that Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja was blessed with a shining sword at the temple of Goddess Bhavani here. The historic battle between Chatrapati Shivaji and Afzal Khan, the commander of the Bijapur Sultanate fought here.
.
SHIVTHARGAL: Shivthar Ghal is a rare yet refreshing, silent yet soothing, small yet unique place waiting to be explored. The name comes from a cavern in this place (‘Ghal’ is for a cavern in Marathi) where Samarth Ramdas (the guru of ‘Shivaji Maharaj’) used to sit, pray, meditate and more importantly scripted down the famous ‘Dasbodh’ manuscript. Shivthar Ghal is a quiet abode, housing some lush green places, a lovely waterfall and a river and some of the toughest on foot, picturesque mountains. Ideal for trekkers, however the silence and the natural beauty here (which can be seen in all forms possible) can soothe one and all.

The birthplace of legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, The Shivneri Fort is not very far (approximately 40 km) from Malshej Ghat which is in Junnar region.

Shivneri Fort (शिवनेरी किल्ला) is a 17th-century military fortification located near Junnar. It is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha Empire.

Shahaji, Chatrapati Shivaji’s father, was a general in the army of the Adil Shah, Sultan of Bijapur. He was concerned for the safety of his wife Jijabai during her pregnancy as there was constant warfare going on. He therefore moved his family to Shivneri fort. Shivneri is a highly defensible location, with steep rocks on four sides and a strongly built citadel.

Chhatrapati Shivaji was born at the fort on 19 February 1630, and spent his childhood there.he got his name SHIVBA here. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji was named.

The highest point of the fort is at a height of 3500 feet above the sea level. The Junnar taluka lies at the foot of this fort. One more thing about Junnar taluka is that it has the highest density of leopard population in the country.

Some of the attraction places in and around Shivneri Fort are given below:

a. Badami Talao: This is a small lake at the centre of Shivneri Fort

b. Goddess Shivai Temple: There is a small temple of goddess Shivai inside the fort. Shivaji was in fact named after this goddess.

c. Lenyadri Caves: We can see the Lenyadri caves just two kilometerss away from Shivneri fort. The history says that Parvathi wanted have Vinayak as her son and performed penance at this caves for nearly 12 years.

d. Shiv Janmasthan: This is the birth place of Shivaji. It is considered by local people as religious place and also called locally as Shiv mandir.

This fort is surrounded by Korigad, Telbaila and Sudhagad, but still lonely and separated. There is not much documentation explored about history of the fort. Earlier it was with Koli Samant, then with Adilshah and later with Marathas.

Telbaila is basically a watch tower built to guard over the Sahwashni ghat near Pali. It consists of two rock walls , the left and the right clearly differentiated by the col in between. There is a temple of local goddess at the base of the twin wall. There are lot of ancient man made water tank & caves at the base as well as on the climbing routes. Though not of much historic importance – the rock walls of Telbaila offer great rock climbing opportunities of technical grade.

Some information about the area:
The places that will be visiting are:
1. Korlai Fort

2. Janjira Fort
3. Phasad wild life Sanctuary

4. Padmadurg / Kasa fort

.
Korlai Fort:
Korlai fort can be seen from the bridge at Salav, located at three Kms. from Revdanda, on the Revdanda – Kashid road. The fort is an Old Portuguese outpost guarding the entrance to the river. A small road leads up to the top of the fort. There is a Lighthouse on the fort and a small climb from behind the lighthouse will take you to the fort. The fort is in ruins, but the view from the lighthouse is beautiful and the rocky beach at Korlai is also good.
.

The Janjira Fort:
Janjira is Marathi corruption of the Arabic word Jazirah, which means an island. The Janjira Fort was built by the rulers of the Ahmed Nagar under the patronage of emperor Malik Amber in the 15th century AD. The fort is build in the sea 2 km inside of Murud. This is one of the vital sea-forts in Maharashtra. It has strong walls 40 ft high and standing intact even after being battered by the sea waves from all four sides. the fort was never conquered by any enemy for over 350 years. Shivaji, Sambhaji and the Peshwas tried to take over the fort. But the Marathas, British or Portuguese could never capture Janjira.
.
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary:
The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing revelation. Primarily a bird sanctuary, Phansad is also home to a whole array of insects, amphibians and mammals. Spread across 52.71 sq. km., Phansad is located in the Murud and Roha talukas of Raigad District in Maharashtra.
.
Padmadurg / Kasa fort:
Spread over a vast area of about 9 acres, Padmadurg Fort is regarded as one among the major sea forts in India. A monument of great historical importance, it is situated in Raigad District of Maharashtra. This famous fort is constructed by the great Marathas in order to conquer the Janjira Fort which lies near by.
Padmadurg Fort commemorates the repeated failure attempts of the mighty Marathas reigme against the tiny Siddis. Padmadurg fort which is now called as Kasa fort, spilt in to three by the ravage of time and now it is not easily accessible to the public. Ruins of this great fort can be seen from the seashore.

Dear All,

शिखर वेध has arranged a 3 – day Bike Trip to Ganpatipule - Ratnagiri – Pawas – Purngad – Marleshwar region, on March 23 – 25, 2012

Brief Introduction about Places as below: -
.
Ganpatipule: Nestled in the greenery is a nearly 4000 year old landmark the Swayambhu Ganpati Temple (Swayambhu means a self-originated idol, Ganapati). It is flooded by thousands of devotees and tourists every year. Ganpatipule, the Lord of the ‘ganas’ or army and “pule” means sand dunes. It is one of the ‘Ashta Ganapatis’ (eight Ganpatis) of India and is known as ‘Paschim Dwar Dewata’ (Western Sentinel God).
.
Purnagad: Purnagad fort is situated on a mountain which is at the origin of Muchakundi creek. This fort is having a small area but the bastions are having a very strong construction. One can view the entire fort premises in a sight.
.
Pawas : Pawas, a village with captivating natural beauty. This is a prime spiritual place in Ratnagiri district due to a very long stay of Swami (saint) Swaroopanand. Swami Swaroopanand was a follower of Warkari Sampraday ( Tradition).
.
Bhatye Suru Ban: The entire coast of the Bhatye village is covered with ‘Suru’ trees and is locally known as Bhatye Suru Ban. The entire area is covered with trees and is very beautiful.

Bhatye beach: The Bhatye beach is a clean and beautiful beach. The beach is less crowded and secluded as it is a little away from the main city. At one end of the beach you can also visit the temple of ‘Zhari Vinayak‘.

Ratnagiri (THIBA ) Palace: One of the major attractions of Ratnagiri city situated on a small hillock. There is also a best sunset point from here. One can have a panoramic view of Someshwar creek, Bhatye bridge to pawas and Arabian sea. This palace was used for keeping the King Thibaw, last king of Burma (now Myanmar) under house arrest. Thibaw ruled the Burma for 6 years.

Ratnadurg: Besieged by the charming Arabian Sea on the three sides, the massive Ratnadurga Fort presents a splendid look. A massive structure in the shape of a horseshoe, with a length of 1,300 meters and a width of 1,000 meters, Ratnadurg Fort was once a strong hold of the Maratha Empire.
Spread over a vast area of 120 acres, Ratnadurg Fort was under the Muslim rule for so many years. Now a collapsed structure, lying across two hills, Ratnadurg Fort gives a decrepit look.Overlooking the Arabian Sea, Ratnadurg Fort offers the dazzling view of the sun going down the sea and the sweet sound of the pounding of the waves against the rocks makes a perfect symphony. Another specific attraction in the fort is the marvelous lighthouse situated in the bastions of the fort. Once in the fame of glory, Ratnadurg Fort on the coastal line of the Konkan region is a perfect place to getaway from the trappings of the city life.
.
Marleshwar Temple: Tourists should visit this important temple in Sangmeshwar for devotion and natural beauty. We can see Sahyadri’s huge precipice and river. We get a surprise when we reach Marleshwar in the pleasant atmosphere. At the right side we get the entrance of the cave and near the entrance of the cave, there is ‘Kund’ of cold water. When we enter the cave we can see Shri. Marleshwar. Friendly snakes and cobras are everywhere in the cave but noteworthy thing is not a single person has died because of snakes here. If we go ahead, ‘Dhareshwar’ waterfall can be seen. The waterfall sight is very beautiful from the cave but we don’t get an idea about the height of the waterfall from here. We will have to go beyond ‘Karambeli Doh’ for that. .

Brief Introduction about Induri / Sangramdurg: –

Height: ~ 1750 ft Type: Land Fort
Grade: simple
Location: Talegaon / Chakan .

Induri Fort is situated in Talegaon-Dabadhe village. The “Induri Fort” was built by Sarsenapati Khanderao Yesajirao Dabhade in 1720-21. The fort also had a mint (Coin) in it. The temple of Goddess Kadjai is also in the fort. Fort has around 9-10 bastions, Entrance door, Rooms with different types of carvings. The Goddess was got in the Sarsenapati Dabhade Family by Ambikabaisaheb (d/o Shitole Family of Patas) after her marriage to Sarsenapati Yashwantrao Dabhade Ist} .

Sangram Durg is situated at Chakan, Pune. It is a land fort. Firangoji Narsala was a renowned Maratha warrior and military leader in the army of Shivaji Maharaj. He is famous for his defence of this fort against a Mughal army led by Shayeste Khan in 1660. Firangoji was a ‘Killedar’ (garrison commander) of this fort in Chakan (Pune). When Shayeste Khan invaded Pune with a lakh of soldiers, he selected Sangram Durga as the first target. He attacked the fort with 10,000 soldiers. Firangoji Narsala was prepared for this attack, however, even though he had only 200 soldiers. Just before this attack Shivaji had asked his commander to leave the fort. However, Firangoji decided not to abandon the fort and instead started a fierce guerrilla war against the Mughals and defended the fort in this way for almost two months. Chakan Fort is situated in Chakan on National Highway 50. The last Maratha – British war took place here. The fort is in a ruined state now. .

A Tribute visit at Vadu – Tulapur :

A article for the same is here (Date – 11 March 1689)
