शिखर वेध – Trek to Malhargad, Jejuri & Purandar – Vajragad on Sat-Sunday 22-23 October 2011

Dear All,

शिखर वेध, has arranged Trek to Malhargad, Jejuri & Purandar – Vajragad near Saswad, Pune on Sat-Sunday 22-23 October 2011
.
Hope to c u on trek :-)

Details r as follows

Brief Introduction about Malhargad / Jejuri / Purandar – Vajrgad :

Height: 3100 feet/ 2355 feet/ 4472 feet
Grade: Easy
Base Village:Sonori / Jejuri / Narayanpur
Location: Pune region

Malhargad : Malhargad is a hill fort situated around 30 km from Pune. Malhargad is also known as Sonori fort because of the village Sonori situated at its base. It was the last fort built by the Marathas, Sardar Paanse. Hence it is also known as Tarun Killa. Tarun in Marathi means young and Killa means fort. The fort is believed to be built to keep watch on ‘Dive’ ghat along the Pune-Saswad route. The fort was built during the period of 1757 to 1760.

Jejuri: Jejuri is one of the famous temples in Maharashtra. Popularly known as ‘ Khandobachi Jejuri ‘ – it is one of the major Gods in Maharashtra. The God of Jejuri – Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand – is popular amongst the Dhangars. As the temple is on the hill, one has to climb almost 200 steps. But the climbing is not so tough and the wonderful view of Jejuri town is marvelous.

PURANDAR: The fort, being quite a huge one was a good place for defense. It had the capacity to house many soldier-troops, foods grains and ammunition which proved sufficient for long durations during wartime. Nonetheless, the fort hosts strong fortified places from which a watchful eye can be kept over surrounding area. The history of the Purandar fort goes back to the 13th century. The Bahamani Sultans in the 14th century built here some walls and bastions. From 1484 AD, for about a hundred years, the fort remained in the hands of the Nizamshahi rulers. In 1596 AD, the fort was given as Jagir to Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Shivaji. However, Shivaji had to struggle very hard to establish his control over the fort in 1646 AD. In 1665 AD, Purandar was besieged by the mighty Mughal forces under the command of Jai Singh and Dilir Khan. In the ensuing battle Murar Baji Prabhu, the gallant commander of the fort, was killed. Shivaji, under a treaty, had to surrender to the Mughals his 23 forts, including Purandar and Vajragarh. At the lower fort a statue of Murar Baji Prabhu has been installed in his memory. Purandar was recaptured by Shivaji in 1670 AD Later it became a favourite retreat of the Peshwas. Purandar was captured by the British in 1818 AD. During the Second World War, the British kept here the German war prisoners. Dr. H. Goetz, one of the German prisoners, thoroughly studied Purandar and wrote a monograph on it. Maharaj’s son, Sambhaji, was born on Vaishakh Shudhha 12, Shake’ 1579, ie., 16th May 1657, Thursday on this fort.

शिखर वेध – 1 day trek to Avachitgad on Sunday 9 October 2011

Dear All,

Brief Introduction about Avchitgad: -

Height: 300 metre
Grade: Easy …
Time: ~ Maximum 1.5 hrs from Medha, Base Village
Location: Roha, Raigad District

The city of Roha is situated on the banks of Kundalika River. Avchitgad is situated in the mountain ranges around Roha. Nicely tucked away from the main Shayadri range this is a rather unexplored fort (as per trekkeres are concerned). This region is beautiful, and the fort was one of the rich forts of Maharashtra. Dense woods along the mountain have made it bit difficult to ascend to the top.

Fascinating Spot: -

The main entrance to the fort is still in good condition. The bastion on the way from Medhe is in much better state. It was used for keeping a watch on the surrounding region. As we proceed further from the main entrance, we come across the remnants of old constructions on a neighboring hillock.
There is a beautiful dodecahedron (16 sided) shaped lake on the top. Near to it is a statue of Lord Khandoba. The fort is not much wide, but stretches long enough. It takes about two hours to see the fort. The forest around the fort is dense and the fauna comprises wild hogs, leopards, foxes, monkeys, etc.

From the top of Avchitgad we can have a glimpse of Telbaila, Sudhagad, Sarasgad, Korigad to the Noth-East & Dhangad, Raigad and Savashna Ghat on the South – East side. All these forts lie within a 25 km radius of this fort.

Details as below:

Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.
Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.

Devgad

Kanoji Angre, chief of Martha admiralty, was instrumental in erecting this elegant looking fort in 1705. Devgad is a natural harbor and well guarded port town. Earlier big ships used to dock at the port jetty.
When the fort was built it was surrounded by water from all the sides so at the time it was called as “Janjire Devgad”(Janzira means an island in Arabic). It has been spread in 120 acres. There is a Ganesh temple in the fort. Port office is situated in the fort. The lighthouse is situated here.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings.
This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.

Sindhudurga – Padmagad forts:

Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory.
The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land.
In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shivarajeshwar temple’ of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of shivaji’s fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Kille Nivati

This dilapidated fort by the seashore impress upon the visitor by its range of rocks situated at its bottom. The rippling perennial springs here content one’s mind. Fort also commands the fine view of Bhogwe beach.
Kille Nivati was constructed by great Maratha ruler Shivaji. He was such a visionary who had given proper attention at his naval force. He built many forts for the protection of his empire. From this fort, one can observe Bhogave’s allevaing beach

Tarkarli Beach
Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Snorkeling: is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort.
Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment.
