शिखर वेध have planned Panhala-Pavankhind-Vishalgad Padbhraman Mohim on 13-15th July 2012. This Mohim commomerates Shivaji’s escape from the besieged Panhala to the safety of Vishalgad

.

History:

Panhala-Pavankhind-Vishalgad

Chatrapati Shivaji was under siege of Siddi Johar on Panhala fort from 2nd March 1660. The siege lasted long and all food stocks had finished and made things difficult for Shivaji. It was impossible to defeat the 30000 soldiered troop of Siddi. Shivaji with some 600 mavalas decided to escape to Vishalgad, 65 kms away. It was Ashadi Pournima, with heavy rains falling. Shivaji informed Siddi that he would surrender hence Siddi troops were little careless. Taking advantage Shivaji escaped frm Panhala. He wasn’t safe till he reached Vishalgad. Some how Siddi’s troops spotted Shivaji escape, he immediately sent horsed troops behind him and they got hold of Shivaji, who was later brought to Siddi’s camp. But it was Shivaji’s game plan; person whom they had caught was not Shivaji, but Siva Kashid Navi who was immediately killed. Siddi somehow came to know that Shivaji was on his way to Vishalgad, and so sent troops behind him. Shivaji knew that Siddi’s troops were following him. Baji Prabhu, Shivaji’s loyal sardar decided to stay in Ghod Khind with 300 mavalas, a col were mountain ridges near Vishalgad unite and was the only way to Vishalgad then. Baji with his 300 mavalas had guerilla warfare at Ghodkhind and held the Siddis troops there. They fought bravely till their death. It was only after Baji heard the canon fire indicating safe reach of Shivaji at Vishalgad, he gave his life. It was 21 hour continuous journey from Panhala to Vishalgad. Story didn’t end here; Shivaji had to fight his way to Vishalgad. Vishalgad is a fort difficult to conquer, difficult to lay siege. Also even if siege was laid, one would have enough time to escape to Konkan. Siddi was building siege on Vishalgad, but Shivaji with his diplomatic trick made Adil Shah bring back Siddi Johar.

Brief Introduction abt Raigad:-
Height:Abt 2900 ft
Grade:Easy
Time:~2 hrs from Pachad near Mahad
Location:Raigad Range

“Fort Raigad is much more than a mere tourist spot. It is a sacred place of pilgrimage, which has left an imprint of the grand vision of Hindavi Swarajya as cherished by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
Fort Raigad was the capital of the most illustrious Maratha sovereign, nurtured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is a monument of his prophetic vision of Hindavi Swarajya.

Sightseeing :

The first main place on the fort is the main door – ‘Maha Darawaja‘. After the main door, Ganga sagar and some remains of the palace can be seen. Hirkani Buruj can also be seen and one don’t believe the heroic deeds of Hirkani (she came down the fort bare footed at night from this point). The famous ‘Takmak Tok’ or place for life punishment – is on the north side. Its thrilling to stand near Takmak Tok which is always with full of breeze. One can see the ammunition store here. The market place on the fort is worth to watch and history lovers spends time here recalling the great warrior.

The statue of ‘Shivaji Maharaj’ is situated at the center of the fort. The Samadhi of Maharaj is also very beautiful and one can remember Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his contribution and full dedication to Swaraj. The other places to visit on the fort are Jagdishwar Temple, Koli Lake, Shirkai Temple etc. The view of ‘Lingana’ is also wonderful.

Hope 2 catch u wid us J

.
Fascinating Spots that we will be visiting are:-

.

Mahabaleshwar:

It is a hill station situated in the Sayhadri range of Maharashtra state. It is situated at a distance of 285 kms from Mumbai. It is situated in Satara district at an altitude of 1372 m above sea level. Here we can see and enjoy cool mountain air, lush greenery, breathtaking valleys and Soaring Mountain peaks.

.

Tapola (Mini Kashmir):

Also known as the Mini Kashmir of the west is a 25 km drive away from Mahabaleshwar. The drive is magnificent, with two rivers flowing around the high hills Koyna on one side and Solshi on the other. Both these rivers meet at Tapola. The dam is the biggest in Maharashtra – Known as ‘Shivsagar’.The famous boat Club in Shivsagar is very popular for motor boats. One can enjoy boating here at nominal charges.

.

Points to visit at Mahabaleshwar :-

.
Panchganga Mandir :

This place has it in the hindu mythology that the five rivers Krishna, Venna, Gayatri, Savitri and Koyna show their appearance in the form of five close springs and make their presence here.

.

Various Points:
The Elphinston point gives a spectacular view of the Koyna and Sahyadri valleys. Down south to this point is the Hunter’s point which gives a splendid view of the Koyna Valley.
Move down a bit more and you come across something called the Arthur’s seat. This is the place that clearly demarcates the Konkan and Deccan territories in Mahabaleshwar by the barren deep Savitri valley to the left and a shallow valley to the right.
To the left on Arthur’s seat you have a series of steps that lead you to Tiger springs. This is where the River Savitri is supposed to emerge.
Monkey point and Savitri point:
Savitri point is one beautiful place to be. In fact I found this to be quite appealing – very little open space, not much crowd and then the Deep valleys were just inches from where we stood. It is actually a wonderful echo point. You get a resound of your voice after about 5 seconds!

.

The itinerary for the event will be as Follows:

.
Meeting point:

22:00 Hrs: Dadar TT, Dadar (east) on Friday 11 May 2012

Dear All

We @ शिखर वेध, is glad to invite you for 3rd Bike trip of the season to Korlai, Phansad, Murud Janjira, Padmadurg and the surrounding region on 21st and 22nd April 2012
Some information about the area:
The places that will be visiting are:
1. Korlai Fort

2. Janjira Fort
3. Phasad wild life Sanctuary

4. Padmadurg / Kasa fort

.
Korlai Fort:
Korlai fort can be seen from the bridge at Salav, located at three Kms. from Revdanda, on the Revdanda – Kashid road. The fort is an Old Portuguese outpost guarding the entrance to the river. A small road leads up to the top of the fort. There is a Lighthouse on the fort and a small climb from behind the lighthouse will take you to the fort. The fort is in ruins, but the view from the lighthouse is beautiful and the rocky beach at Korlai is also good.
.

The Janjira Fort:
Janjira is Marathi corruption of the Arabic word Jazirah, which means an island. The Janjira Fort was built by the rulers of the Ahmed Nagar under the patronage of emperor Malik Amber in the 15th century AD. The fort is build in the sea 2 km inside of Murud. This is one of the vital sea-forts in Maharashtra. It has strong walls 40 ft high and standing intact even after being battered by the sea waves from all four sides. the fort was never conquered by any enemy for over 350 years. Shivaji, Sambhaji and the Peshwas tried to take over the fort. But the Marathas, British or Portuguese could never capture Janjira.
.
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary:
The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing revelation. Primarily a bird sanctuary, Phansad is also home to a whole array of insects, amphibians and mammals. Spread across 52.71 sq. km., Phansad is located in the Murud and Roha talukas of Raigad District in Maharashtra.
.
Padmadurg / Kasa fort:
Spread over a vast area of about 9 acres, Padmadurg Fort is regarded as one among the major sea forts in India. A monument of great historical importance, it is situated in Raigad District of Maharashtra. This famous fort is constructed by the great Marathas in order to conquer the Janjira Fort which lies near by.
Padmadurg Fort commemorates the repeated failure attempts of the mighty Marathas reigme against the tiny Siddis. Padmadurg fort which is now called as Kasa fort, spilt in to three by the ravage of time and now it is not easily accessible to the public. Ruins of this great fort can be seen from the seashore.
.
Some information about the area: The places that will be visiting are:1. Velas Beach – Turtle Festival visit 2. Bankot Fort3. Harihareshwar Temple
Velas Beach : Velas is the birth place of Nana Phadnis, one of the great prominent personalities in Maratha history. Due to the sea-shore Velas is an existing place and it is situated near Bankot Bay. There is an old temple of Shri Bhairi- Rameshwar and in this temple all twelve months water is made available taking the benefit of favorable geographical conditions. A statue of Nana Phadnis is present outside his house. In Velas Mahalakshmi temple and Nana Phadnis house are the places to visit. Gokulashtami Festival is one of the important festival in Velas. Velas is also one of the popular breeding sites of Olive Ridley, which is an endangered species of turtle. The hatchlings are heading towards the sea from the shore now-a-days.

Bankot Fort:
Region: MandangadDistrict: RatnagiriHeight: Sea fort (Slightly above sea level) Difficulty: Simple
Bankot is a square shaped fort. On the sides of Bankot fort, there is a dry moat (Revni) dug out in the Jambhya stone. Jambhya stone is peculiar type of stone adorning a purple shade and peculiarly it is incapable of storing water as the water invariable percolates through it owing to its much porous nature. The main entrance (Mahadarwaja) of the fort is north-facing with a well sculpted arch and carvings. Watch guards dug out (Devdya) align on both sides of the Mahadarwaja with some pits being dug out in the right Devdi. On the left, there are steps leading towards Nagarkhana while there is an underground storey and a tunnel on the right. A Maruti idol in the centre stands deserted now. On the west, there is a small entrance (Darwaja) leading to a Bastion on the exterior of the fortifications. A deep well (now dry and filled) occupied the centre of this bastion earlier and the adjacent water tanks too are dry and obsolete now. One can leave the Buruj via a small exit that leads to the surrounding moat and a beautiful “Revni” lying nearby.

Dear All,

शिखर वेध has arranged a 3 – day Bike Trip to Ganpatipule - Ratnagiri – Pawas – Purngad – Marleshwar region, on March 23 – 25, 2012

Brief Introduction about Places as below: -
.
Ganpatipule: Nestled in the greenery is a nearly 4000 year old landmark the Swayambhu Ganpati Temple (Swayambhu means a self-originated idol, Ganapati). It is flooded by thousands of devotees and tourists every year. Ganpatipule, the Lord of the ‘ganas’ or army and “pule” means sand dunes. It is one of the ‘Ashta Ganapatis’ (eight Ganpatis) of India and is known as ‘Paschim Dwar Dewata’ (Western Sentinel God).
.
Purnagad: Purnagad fort is situated on a mountain which is at the origin of Muchakundi creek. This fort is having a small area but the bastions are having a very strong construction. One can view the entire fort premises in a sight.
.
Pawas : Pawas, a village with captivating natural beauty. This is a prime spiritual place in Ratnagiri district due to a very long stay of Swami (saint) Swaroopanand. Swami Swaroopanand was a follower of Warkari Sampraday ( Tradition).
.
Bhatye Suru Ban: The entire coast of the Bhatye village is covered with ‘Suru’ trees and is locally known as Bhatye Suru Ban. The entire area is covered with trees and is very beautiful.

Bhatye beach: The Bhatye beach is a clean and beautiful beach. The beach is less crowded and secluded as it is a little away from the main city. At one end of the beach you can also visit the temple of ‘Zhari Vinayak‘.

Ratnagiri (THIBA ) Palace: One of the major attractions of Ratnagiri city situated on a small hillock. There is also a best sunset point from here. One can have a panoramic view of Someshwar creek, Bhatye bridge to pawas and Arabian sea. This palace was used for keeping the King Thibaw, last king of Burma (now Myanmar) under house arrest. Thibaw ruled the Burma for 6 years.

Ratnadurg: Besieged by the charming Arabian Sea on the three sides, the massive Ratnadurga Fort presents a splendid look. A massive structure in the shape of a horseshoe, with a length of 1,300 meters and a width of 1,000 meters, Ratnadurg Fort was once a strong hold of the Maratha Empire.
Spread over a vast area of 120 acres, Ratnadurg Fort was under the Muslim rule for so many years. Now a collapsed structure, lying across two hills, Ratnadurg Fort gives a decrepit look.Overlooking the Arabian Sea, Ratnadurg Fort offers the dazzling view of the sun going down the sea and the sweet sound of the pounding of the waves against the rocks makes a perfect symphony. Another specific attraction in the fort is the marvelous lighthouse situated in the bastions of the fort. Once in the fame of glory, Ratnadurg Fort on the coastal line of the Konkan region is a perfect place to getaway from the trappings of the city life.
.
Marleshwar Temple: Tourists should visit this important temple in Sangmeshwar for devotion and natural beauty. We can see Sahyadri’s huge precipice and river. We get a surprise when we reach Marleshwar in the pleasant atmosphere. At the right side we get the entrance of the cave and near the entrance of the cave, there is ‘Kund’ of cold water. When we enter the cave we can see Shri. Marleshwar. Friendly snakes and cobras are everywhere in the cave but noteworthy thing is not a single person has died because of snakes here. If we go ahead, ‘Dhareshwar’ waterfall can be seen. The waterfall sight is very beautiful from the cave but we don’t get an idea about the height of the waterfall from here. We will have to go beyond ‘Karambeli Doh’ for that. .

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.

Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.

Tarkarli Beach
Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India.
