Dear All,

We, at SHIKHAR VEDH invite you all for a one day trek to Asherigad on Sunday 23rd June 2013

Fort: Asheri Gad.
Height: 2000 feet
Range: Palghar.
District: Thane
Level: Medium

History mentions that Bhojraj, a descendant of the Shilahar Dynasty built this fort. Hence it can be assumed that this fort is at least 800 years old. The Portuguese rebuilt this fort after they captured it during their rule. In 1737, Peshwa won this fort during his campaign of the Konkan and in 1818 this fort came under the British rule.

Fascinating Spots :
On the plains and on the right of the path one can see quite many remnants of settlements. One can also see quite many foundations with gutters cut in them. These could be to collect the rainwater during the rainy season or to lead away the overflow. The cave on the top is of medium size and having a large cave opening. But it has been carved into the rocks in such a way that the stray wind or the cold does not enter in. The back portion of the cave is very uneven. However, there are platforms made both outside and inside for the guards to take rest. The two hibiscus bushes outside the cave entrance point to the fact that rituals might have been conducted regularly by the villagers somewhere in the past. On left side of the top portion of the cave, there is a built in square water tank. There is a half buried cannon in this tank. There are two more half completed tanks here. From the top plateau, one can see the fort of Kohoj to the South West. One can also see the natural human form on the fort with the help of binoculars. Going ahead on the path one can see a huge depression the rock face and a bastion.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध have arranged a one day trek to Fort Lohgad & Bhaje caves in Lonavala region on Sunday 16th June 2013

Little info about the fort :

Fort: Lohgad.
Region: Lonavla.
Height: 3400 ft
Grade: Easy.
Type: Hill Fort

History:
Lohagad (literally “Iron fort” in Marathi) is one of the many hill forts of Chatrapati Shivaji. It divides the basins of the Indrayani and Pavna and is situated on a side range of the Sahyadris. The Visapur fort is located on its eastern side. The four large gates of Lohagad are still in good condition and reasonably intact. Historical records show that in the later Peshwa period, Nana Phadnavis (1742-1800 AD) built several structures in the fort such as a big tank and a step-well (bawali).

On the west side, there is a long and narrow wall-like fortified spur called Vinchukata (Marathi for Scorpion’s tail) because of shape.Lohagad has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time: Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji captured it in 1648 CE, but he was forced to surrender it to the Mughals in 1665 CE by the Treaty of Purandar. Shivaji recaptured the fort in 1670 CE and used it for keeping his treasury.

Time: ~ 2.5 hrs from Mahuli, Base Village

Location: Asangaon, Thane District

History: - The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule Nijamshahi dynasty. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Mughals of Delhi tried to end Nijamshahi. In 1635-36, Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji to Mahuli. When Khan Jaman attacked the fort, Shahaji asked Portuguese for help, who refused and Shahaji surrendered. Shivaji took this fort from Mughals on 8 Jan 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Shivaji. In treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed, bcoz of an alert Manohardas Gaud, who was in charge of the fort. Thosand of Marathas were killed. Manohardas Gaud soon gave up his position and Alveerdi Beg took over. On 16 June 1670, afer two months, Moropant Pingle conqured the forts and Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad became part Swarajya. Till 1817, Shivaji’s dynasty owned the fort and later by Britishers.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध have planned Panhala-Pavankhind-Vishalgad Padbhraman Mohim on 12-14th July 2013. This Mohim commomerates Shivaji’s escape from the besieged Panhala to the safety of Vishalgad.

यंदाचे वर्ष ही मोहीम आयोजित करण्याचे ‘शिखर वेध’ या संस्थेचे सलग पाचवे वर्ष आहे !!!

.

History:

Panhala-Pavankhind-Vishalgad

Chatrapati Shivaji was under siege of Siddi Johar on Panhala fort from 2nd March 1660. The siege lasted long and all food stocks had finished and made things difficult for Shivaji. It was impossible to defeat the 30000 soldiered troop of Siddi. Shivaji with some 600 mavalas decided to escape to Vishalgad, 65 kms away. It was Ashadi Pournima, with heavy rains falling. Shivaji informed Siddi that he would surrender hence Siddi troops were little careless. Taking advantage Shivaji escaped frm Panhala. He wasn’t safe till he reached Vishalgad. Some how Siddi’s troops spotted Shivaji escape, he immediately sent horsed troops behind him and they got hold of Shivaji, who was later brought to Siddi’s camp. But it was Shivaji’s game plan; person whom they had caught was not Shivaji, but Siva Kashid Navi who was immediately killed. Siddi somehow came to know that Shivaji was on his way to Vishalgad, and so sent troops behind him. Shivaji knew that Siddi’s troops were following him. Baji Prabhu, Shivaji’s loyal sardar decided to stay in Ghod Khind with 300 mavalas, a col were mountain ridges near Vishalgad unite and was the only way to Vishalgad then. Baji with his 300 mavalas had guerilla warfare at Ghodkhind and held the Siddis troops there. They fought bravely till their death. It was only after Baji heard the canon fire indicating safe reach of Shivaji at Vishalgad, he gave his life. It was 21 hour continuous journey from Panhala to Vishalgad. Story didn’t end here; Shivaji had to fight his way to Vishalgad. Vishalgad is a fort difficult to conquer, difficult to lay siege. Also even if siege was laid, one would have enough time to escape to Konkan. Siddi was building siege on Vishalgad, but Shivaji with his diplomatic trick made Adil Shah bring back Siddi Johar.
