Vijaydurg or Victory Fort:

The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as “Gheria” as it is situated in the village “Girye”. Shivaji Maharaj won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as the then Hindu solar ear’s name was “Vijay”. Vijay means Victory.

Sprawling over an area of 48 acres, Vijaydurg, fort of victory, was once seized by the British following a bloody battle. They renamed it Fort Augustus. A dilapidated board at the entrance of the fort relates its history. One of the best views of the fort is from the jetty. The fort stretches out into the sea and a walk inside its precincts is worthwhile. Shivaji added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.

Sindhudurga – Padmagad forts:

Huge sea rocks of Malvan has easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit through out the year to see this Maratha glory. The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji. In 1664 shivaji erected this fort on 44 acers of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shivarajeshwar temple’ of King Shivaji. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of shivaji’s fingers prints found to be preserved here on one of the wall . Also lies, inside the fort worth seeing temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Tarkarli Beach
Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Snorkeling: is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort.Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity. The primary appeal is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipmentInline image 3

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a one day trip to Padamdurg (KASA FORT) on Sunday 6 April 2014

Padmadurg, also known as Kasa fort, is a fort in Maharashtra, India. It was built by the great Maratha ruler King Shivaji to the northwest of the fort Janjira. It was built mainly to conquer the fort Janjira, although it is not as big as Janjira. Due to incomplete construction, and bombardment from Janjira during its construction, only ruins of the Padmadurg fort remain.

It looks great from Janjira. When Shivaji the Great decided o take on the Siddis of Janjira, his admiral, Daulat Khan, built this fort on an island next to Janjira. The rock, on which the fort was built, was called Kasa and the fort was named Padmadurg. The fort has six bastions, some of them devastated by gun attack from the famous ‘kalal bangdi’ gun in Janjira. Kasa was soon overpowered by Siddis and used as a Jail.

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a one day trip to Induri Fort / Sangramdurg & A Tribute Visit 2 Vadu-Tulapur, on Sunday 30 March 2014

Brief Introduction about Induri / Sangramdurg: –

Height: ~ 1750 ftType: Land Fort
Grade:  simple
Location: Talegaon / Chakan.

Induri Fort is situated in Talegaon-Dabadhe village. The “Induri Fort” was built by Sarsenapati Khanderao Yesajirao Dabhade in 1720-21. The fort also had a mint (Coin) in it. The temple of Goddess Kadjai is also in the fort. Fort has around 9-10 bastions, Entrance door, Rooms with different types of carvings. The Goddess was got in the Sarsenapati Dabhade Family by Ambikabaisaheb (d/o Shitole Family of Patas) after her marriage to Sarsenapati Yashwantrao Dabhade Ist}.

Sangram Durg is situated at Chakan, Pune. It is a land fort. Firangoji Narsala was a renowned Maratha warrior and military leader in the army of Shivaji Maharaj. He is famous for his defence of this fort against a Mughal army led by Shayeste Khan in 1660. Firangoji was a ‘Killedar’ (garrison commander) of this fort in Chakan (Pune). When Shayeste Khan invaded Pune with a lakh of soldiers, he selected Sangram Durga as the first target. He attacked the fort with 10,000 soldiers. Firangoji Narsala was prepared for this attack, however, even though he had only 200 soldiers. Just before this attack Shivaji had asked his commander to leave the fort. However, Firangoji decided not to abandon the fort and instead started a fierce guerrilla war against the Mughals and defended the fort in this way for almost two months.  Chakan Fort is situated in Chakan on National Highway 50. The last Maratha – British war took place here. The fort is in a ruined state now..

Dear All,

We @ शिखर वेध has arranged a Tour to VELAS specially for the Turtle festival on 22 – 23rd March 2014

Some information about the area: The places that will be visiting are:

1. Velas Beach – Turtle Festival visit

2. Bankot Fort

3. Harihareshwar Temple

Velas Beach : Velas is the birth place of Nana Phadnis, one of the great prominent personalities in Maratha history. Due to the sea-shore Velas is an existing place and it is situated near Bankot Bay. There is an old temple of Shri Bhairi- Rameshwar and in this temple all twelve months water is made available taking the benefit of favorable geographical conditions. A statue of Nana Phadnis is present outside his house. In Velas Mahalakshmi temple and Nana Phadnis house are the places to visit. Velas is also one of the popular breeding sites of Olive Ridley, which is an endangered species of turtle.

Bankot Fort:
Region: Mandangad

District: Ratnagiri

Height: Sea fort (Slightly above sea level)

Difficulty: Simple

Bankot is a square shaped fort. On the sides of Bankot fort, there is a dry moat (Revni) dug out in the Jambhya stone. Jambhya stone is peculiar type of stone adorning a purple shade and peculiarly it is incapable of storing water as the water invariable percolates through it owing to its much porous nature. The main entrance (Mahadarwaja) of the fort is north-facing with a well sculpted arch and carvings. Watch guards dug out (Devdya) align on both sides of the Mahadarwaja with some pits being dug out in the right Devdi. On the left, there are steps leading towards Nagarkhana while there is an underground storey and a tunnel on the right. A Maruti idol in the centre stands deserted now. On the west, there is a small entrance (Darwaja) leading to a Bastion on the exterior of the fortifications. A deep well (now dry and filled) occupied the centre of this bastion earlier and the adjacent water tanks too are dry and obsolete now. One can leave the Buruj via a small exit that leads to the surrounding moat and a beautiful “Revni” lying nearby.
