Dear All,
On the Pre-eve of Women’s DAYशिखर वेध has arranged a one day WOMEN SPECIAL TREK to Peb Fort near Matheran, on Sunday March 6, 2011

Brief Introduction about Peb/Vikatgad: -

Height: 2100 ft
Grade:  simple
Time: ~ 2 hrs from Neral
Location: Peb is a fort located near Neral; between Panorama Point (Matheran) and Nakhind to be precise.

Fort Peb is situated on northeast side of Panvel, on Mumbai-Pune road, at a distance of 3-4 km on west side of Neral. This is the most beautiful one-day
trek. The fort derives it name from the Goddess ‘Pebi’;  The fort is also named as ‘VikatGad’ for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, ‘Ganesh’. Historical references clearly indicate that Shivaji Maharaj used the caves on the fort as silos for grain storage. The fort is famous for its caves which are maintained by disciples of Swammi Samartha and the meditation chambers carved out from the rock inside the mountain.

Anjaneri : The fort of Anjaneri, being the birthplace of lord ‘Hanuman’, has a great historical importance. Lord Hanuman was the son of ‘Pavan’ (the wind) and ‘Anjani’, and hence the fort is called as ‘Anjaneri’. Anjaneri is one of the important forts in the ranges of Tryambakeshwar near Nasik.

On the way from Anjaneri village to the fort some carvings can be seen in the caves near the steps. The carvings are intriguing and eye catching. The caves and the inscriptions are believed to be from the Jain followers.
The temple of ‘Anjani Mata’, a big marvelous temple devoted to the mother of Lord Hanuman, is another attraction. The temple is quite big. It is a proper place to accommodate on the fort.
At a certain distance from this temple two different ways can be seen. The way to left hand side takes us directly to ‘Seeta cave’ within 10 minutes. This cave is made up of two rooms. 10 to 12 people can stay here comfortably. There are many carvings inside the cave.
Another way takes us directly to citadel, where one more temple of ‘Anjani Mata’ can be seen. It takes 20 minutes to reach this temple. This temple is also quite big. The perimeter of the fort is very large.

Brief Introduction abt Shivneri / Hadsar:-
Height:Abt 3500 / 3300 ft
Time:~1.5 hrs from Junnar / Hadasr base village
Location:Junnar Range

Shivneri Fort, a birth place of Chhatrapati Shivaji (1627), is located at a distance of around 3 km from Junnar (125 km from Pune). Shahaji, father of Shivaji kept his wife Jijabai in this fort during her pregnancy, as the fort was unique and difficult to reach. It is easier to reach the fort by the normal road than to climb from the hills. One has to get through 7 doors before reaching the actual fort. This fort is a very big structure with a very good height. The old and beautiful ‘Devi Shivai’ temple is on the way. Shivaji was taken from the name of this goddess. Shivaji spent his childhood on this fort.
He acquired all the skills and training on this fort which he used while establishing Swaraj. He learnt the early lessons of Swaraj on this fort. Kaman Take, Kadelot Tok, Koli Chouthara and Dongarmatha (the top of the fort) are the other attractions near the fort.

Hadsar Fort rises on a steep hill near the Nana pass valley eight miles north-west of Junnar and sixty miles north of Pune. The fort lies within the limits of Hadsar village at the foot of the fort. From Junnar the road to the hill lies along the valley of the Kukdi between two ranges of high hills.Fort Hadsar, also known as Parvatgad, was constructed in the Satvaahan era and was quite inhabited during that period. It is located on the outskirts of Nagar (Ahmednagar) in order to protect the trade route passing through Naneghat. Documentary evidence shows that fort Hadsar was included in the treaty made by Shahaji Raje with the Mughals in 1637. In 1818 the British forces conquered Junnar and the forts in the region.
